2013-2014 LIVE LIKE SION STEEP & DEEP PIPELINE PHOTO CHALLENGE RULES

S&D_logo2014

BACKGROUND

This is a grass roots event held in honor of Sion Milosky, world-class big wave waterman and Pipeline master. This challenge is for the “boys” and for those who surf or photograph Pipeline and Backdoor.

Sion loved watching his friends out in the lineup and encouraged them all to go for it and get shacked. In true Sion fashion, this unique contest creates camaraderie between surfers and photographers. Any registered photographer may submit a photo of any registered surfer. This levels the playing field and increases the likelihood that underground pipe chargers get great photos!

You will also receive a limited edition LIVE LIKE SION t-shirt to commemorate the Third Annual Steep & Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge. Wear it with pride!

This challenge is an equal opportunity playing field for all the surfers and photographers participating out in the lineup. Surfers and photographers go hand in hand and you can’t have one without the other. This event is to recognize the skills and abilities of both the surfers and the photographers. Submit your best photo and it could win. It doesn’t matter if your sponsored or not. If you charge as a surfer and or if you’re a photographer that shoots from a special angle to get that perfect shot, submit your photo and you could win. This challenge only includes waves caught or shot at Pipeline and or Backdoor surf spots within the contest time period. Surfers are encouraged to coordinate with any and all photographers who may have captured their images of the ride in question to ensure they enter the images in the contest. Surfers last day to register is on November 25, 2013. Photographers can enter up to and no later than 11:59 p.m (HST) of December 15, 2013. Only registered participant photos are accepted for contention.

JUDGING CRITERIA AND EVENT PROCEDURES

a) Selection of Finalists: After the closing date of the contest window, the judging panel will evaluate the entries for adherence to the rules, and from the qualified entries nominate five finalists. The judges will determine with careful consideration and consensus the winning photo based on the criteria set forth.

b) Judging Panel: A select panel of judges will decide the winner of this season’s event. The judges are respected individuals within the north shore surfing community and or notable in their own right as proving themselves to be Pipeline/Backdoor specialists and or notable respected Pipeline surfing photographers.

c) Judging Method: Following the close of the contest period, the judges will be contacted and given details on how to review all the shots submitted via the website or other technically sufficient manner of content delivery. Judges will be expected to use their best efforts to fully review all images and participate according to the rules and spirit of the event. Judges who may have personally witnessed a candidates ride may draw on those experiences in addition to the related sequence if submitted. Judges should refrain from lobbying other judges or otherwise making their votes public prior to the passing of the voting deadline.

d) Judging Criteria and Guidance: Photo entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality and effectiveness in expressing the contest and theme.

Judges are looking for the style and commitment of the surfer given the critical circumstance he is faced with on the wave, wave and barrel size, difficulty to negotiate a section, along with positioning and depth of surfer in the barrel.

Aside from the steepness and deepness of the surfer in the image, all photographs will be judged on overall composition, sharpness and image quality and personal shooting style of the photographer from water or land.

e) Judging Points System: After becoming familiar with all the photos, judges will then collaboratively choose 5 finalist images. Each judge will be asked to consider the judging criteria and guidance and rank the five finalist rides in the order they feel appropriate from first to fifth place. Each judge will then submit his or her ballot by email to the event director. The following point values will be assigned to the ranking on each ballot and an overall total will be calculated from all ballots submitted.

1st= 100 points, 2nd= 75 points, 3rd= 55 points, 4th= 40 points, 5th= 30 points

In case of a judge assigning a tie to two or more photos on a ballot, the averaged score of the tied photos on that ballot will be tallied. For example, a tie between 4th and 5th would each receive 35 points, etc.

An appropriate deadline will be set for receipt of all ballots. Any ballots submitted after the deadline will not be counted. Individual ballots will remain secret to ensure candid input.

The winning surfer and photographer will be selected on or about the 2nd week following the close of the Entry Period and notified by email and or phone immediately following the winners decision.

Sponsors reserve the right not to award all prizes in the event an insufficient number of eligible entries meeting the minimum judging criteria are received, as determined by sponsors and judges in their sole discretion.

Decisions of the judges are final and binding. Entries not complying with the rules set forth above will be disqualified.
